    Medicare FAQs

Selecting a Medicare plan involves assessing your healthcare needs, budget, and preferences. Start by understanding the different parts of Medicare: Part A (Hospital Insurance), Part B (Medical Insurance), Part C (Medicare Advantage), and Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage). If you prefer more flexibility and want to choose your own doctors, Original Medicare (Part A and B) might be suitable. For additional benefits like dental, vision, and hearing, consider a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan. Additionally, compare Part D plans if you require prescription drug coverage. It’s crucial to evaluate plan costs, coverage options, and provider networks before making a decision. Consulting with a licensed Medicare broker can help you navigate your options.

Working with a Medicare broker or agent offers several benefits, including personalized advice and expert guidance through the complexities of Medicare plans. Brokers can help you compare different plans, understand costs, and find a plan that fits your specific healthcare needs and budget. They stay updated on changes in Medicare regulations and can assist in enrolling in the right plan. Additionally, brokers provide ongoing support, helping you adjust your coverage if your healthcare needs change. Best of all, their services are typically free, as they are compensated by the insurance companies, not by you.

Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) covers many healthcare services, but there are gaps in coverage that can lead to significant out-of-pocket costs. These gaps include deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance for hospital stays, doctor visits, and other medical services. Medicare does not cover routine dental, vision, or hearing care, long-term care, or overseas emergency health services. A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan helps fill these gaps by covering some or all of these out-of-pocket costs, offering financial protection and peace of mind.

If you need a replacement Medicare card, you can request one online through your Social Security account at www.ssa.gov. Log in to your account, navigate to the “Replacement Documents” section, and select “Mail my replacement Medicare Card.” You can also obtain a replacement by calling Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or by visiting your nearest Social Security office. Your new card should arrive in about 30 days, and your Medicare coverage will not be affected while you wait for the replacement.

You can sign up for Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period, which starts three months before you turn 65 and ends three months after your 65th birthday. If you’re already receiving Social Security benefits, you’ll be automatically signed up for Medicare Part A and Part B. If not, you can apply online at www.ssa.gov/medicare, call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213, or visit your local Social Security office. If you want Medicare Advantage (Part C) or a Medicare Prescription Drug (Part D) plan, you’ll need to sign up for those separately through a private insurance company.

If you already have Medicare Part A and want to enroll in Part B, you’ll need to complete Form CMS-40B (Application for Enrollment in Medicare Part B). You can get this form online at www.cms.gov or by calling Social Security. You can submit the completed form to your local Social Security office by mail or in person. If you delayed Part B enrollment due to having other coverage, you may also need to provide proof of your prior insurance. Once your application is processed, you’ll receive confirmation of your Part B coverage start date.
